Event: 40 Spiritual Hacks – A series of 9 sessions based on Shri Adi Shankara’s Sadhana Panchakan

Session 1- why should one do Sadhana? In order to attain the highest happiness. What are the sadhanas that one should do? In His text, Shankara states 40 different sadhanas, which we can choose from.

The first one being, STUDY THE VEDAS DAILY. Vid= by which we know.

Daily studies of the scriptures improves clarity (vivek), empowers the mind and intellect and keeps us rooted in our culture.

 

 

Session 2 - DO YOUR KARMA . Karma is actions done with the body, mind & intellect with an intention and a sense of doership, which fructifies into a result. All actions must be backed by values. Do actions with the right attitude so that they do not bind us. Swamiji also explained the 6 types of actions –daily, obligatory, selfish, prohibited, for atonement& meditation on the form.

(Session 3-7)

SATSANG: Sat=Truth (A Self Realized Master), Sang=Company. Keep the company of Realized Masters, of seekers, read books and hear talks, which inculcate good thoughts & values and maintain positivity of the mind. Satsang creates detachment and instills interest towards God and disinterest towards the world of objects. It also eliminates delusion, fear & sorrow.

LOVE: Bhakti is the highest form of love. It helps one to rise above one’s ego and individuality and unite with Him. Bhakti will go deep in only those who practice value and it is imperative to have a Guru’s guidance.

GURU : Why a Guru? To light a candle, another lit candle is required. Gu=darkness, Ru=remover; the remover of ignorance.

Stay firm and totally devoted to the Guru. Be completely available to Him and ask Him relevant questions.

GURU PADUKAS: Acronym: pa=paati =protect - from temptations. du=dunoti=burn – one’s ignorance. Kaa=kaashate=shines – reveals the Self-effulgent Self to us.

Paduka is the symbol of the ideal the Guru stands for, ie The Self.

‘OM’-AUM is a Vedic mantra; a subtle and powerful pointer to the Truth. Om is a complete mantra (purnamanta) by itself.

THE 4 MAHAVAKYAS- 1) Prajnanam Brahaman-the definition of the Truth, Consciousness is Brahaman. 2) Tat tvam asi-student is initiated to the Truth, That thou art. 3) Ayam atma Brahaman-direct experience of the student. I am That. 4) Aham Brahama asmi-declaration of the student, I am That.
