After the Kurukshetra war, as Bheeshma Pitamaha rests on the arrow-bed, Krishna tells Yudhishthira that with the end of Bheeshma, will come to an end of an era of wise men and thus advises him to seek knowledge from him.
It is then, that making the Bed of arrows as his Asana and the Kurukshetra battlefield as his classroom, the great Gangaputra Bheeshma spells out the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram. Thus blessing not only the Pandavas but all future generations to come.
