Significance of Guru Poornima
Celebrated on the full moon day (Poornima) in the month of Ashada (June–July)
- The moon has no light of its own, on Poornima it is able to shine only by reflecting the bright rays of the sun. It glorifies the effulgence of the sun.
Be like the moon, let your actions, thoughts and words reflect the glory of your Guru. Uphold his values, teachings and be a beacon for others to follow.
- Emerge from Amavasya to Poornima – only an empty, clean surface can reflect brightly. Become an empty receptacle by purifying oneself through selfless service and sadhana. Emerge from the darkness of ignorance by breaking away from the ego and all attachments. Become Purna by reflecting the Self brightly like the full moon.
- Ashada Poornima announces the arrival of the eagerly awaited Chaturmasa, the rainy season after a hot scorching summer.
Be Chaturmasa – after the long period of intense, patient sadhana and study it is time to practically apply all that one has heard, studied, reflected upon - shower unconditional love, do selfless service, invoke deep devotion towards the Lord and put forth tireless efforts to keep the Vision of the Guru alive.
When Lord Shiva became the first Guru – Adi Guru
- It is said, a long time ago a yogi appeared in the Himalayas whose calm presence drew people. He sat still and showed no signs of life except occasional tears of joy. Eventually people moved away but seven men waited until he opened his eyes and pleaded with him to help them experience the same. He ignored them but they persisted. Finally he gave them a simple preparatory step and closed his eyes again. They followed his advice but the yogi did not open his eyes even once. After 84 years the yogi opened his eyes. They had become shining receptacles, he could ignore them no more. On the next full moon day, the yogi turned south and sat as a Guru to these seven men. Lord Shiva, the Adiyogi (the first yogi) thus became the Adi Guru. The seven disciples became celebrated as the Saptrishis and took this knowledge across the world.
Become a shining receptacle by following even one ideal of the Guru persistently. His Grace will lead you to evolve consciously. Those who listen, learn. Those learn, practice. Those who practice, receive His Grace. Those who receive Grace, evolve.
Sage Vyasa is born on this day. Guru Poornima is also known as Vyasa Poornima.
- Vedas are “Shrutis”, revelations, experienced by the great ancient sages in moments of intense meditation which were passed down by the Gurus to their disciples by word of mouth until it was written, complied and structured into a systematic format by Rishi Krishna Dwaipayana revered as “Veda Vyasa”, the compiler of the Vedas.
It is the Guru through whom this knowledge is revealed to us. It is the Guru who guides us, awakens the quest in us, illumines the path and inspires us from the innermost core of our being. The Guru is Brahman manifest in a human form.
