Chinmaya Mission
At the end of the 2nd Jnana Yagna in Chennai(in 1953), a handful of people expressed the desire to create a forum for study and discussion, to keep up the Inspiration invoked during the Jnana Yagnas and call it “Chinmaya Mission”. Swami Chinmayananda replied:
“Don’t start any organization in my name. I have not come here to be institutionalized. I have come to give the message of our ancient sages, which has benefitted me. If it has benefitted you, pass it on.”

The devotees wrote back saying that we are calling ourselves Chinmaya Mission as Chinmaya means ‘Pure Knowledge’ and as seekers of Truth we are calling ourselves Chinmaya Mission.

Thus on 8th August 1953 Chinmaya Mission was established in Chennai.

Central Chinmaya Mission Trust (CCMT) was registered in Mumbai on June 27, 1964. It serves as the head office for Chinmaya Mission, co-ordinating all activities and projects, provides guidance, policy and structure to all centres of Chinmaya Mission.

Swami Chinmayananda was inspired by a vision and so he took initiatives for cultural revival. He did not wait for someone. He was self-made. The entire organisation, the field, is created by him. He did his own publicity. Never did he say that no one is doing anything for me. He built the teams, guided them. He carried a yagna-box with him for many years, so that no one is troubled in organising the yagnas. It would have everything needed for a yagna. Including a lamp, matchbox, vyas peeth, cloth for it, text, prasad pustika etc. He set the discipline and organising standards through this. This is the meaning of Svayam Kurvan - He did it by himself and when people joined him, he inspired them also to be a part of this great grand yagna of cultural revival.

Yet he was detached completely from everything. After correspondence with Swamiji, on 8th August 1953 Chinmaya Mission was established in Chennai.
