Makar Sankranti Celebration

Gayatri Havan was conducted by Smt. Sadhana Chowdhry at the home of Sh. Prakash and Smt. Urvashi Thakur, on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti. Almost 70 people joined the programmed online, via zoom.

The morning started at 8 am with Om Chanting, invocation prayers and a melodious Ganesh bhajan composed by pujya Guruji, sung by our zonal member, Punitaji.

Then, Sadhana Chowdhryji, gave a lucid explanation on the importance of this day and on the meaning of Gayatri Mantra. Makar Sankranti is celebrated all over India, to mark the auspicious day when the Sun starts its Northern journey (Uttarayana) into the zodiac sign of Makara, or Capricorn.

The Gayatri Mantra is an invocation to Gayatri Devi. It was revealed to Rishi Vishwamitra for the benefit of humanity. The power of the Vedas is contained in Gayatri, and Gayatri’s power is further condensed into Om.

The Havan was conducted with chanting of Gayatri Mantra 108 times. Aahuti was offered by all members of the Thakur household. Smt. Anita Seth and Sri Vedant Chowdhry’s presence at the venue made the chanting more powerful. The Havan concluded with Gayatri Aarti, a beautiful Gayatri Devi bhajan by Punitaji and the Shanti Paath.
